Travel ban strengthened on Iran 'out of abundance of caution'

Health Minister Greg Hunt says the government has taken serious measures in its attempt to prevent the further spread of the coronavirus, particularly in relation to Iran where “it is clear there is an uncontrolled spread”.

Mr Hunt announced travelers arriving in Australia are required to self-isolate for a 14 day period upon arrival in Australia if they were in Iran from February 19.

He said “we do this out of an abundance of caution but recognising that the situation in Iran is clearly far worse than has been documented and significantly higher than the recorded case numbers”.

The health minister also confirmed the number of domestic coronavirus cases has risen to 41 with NSW Health conducting “contact-tracing” in response to an aged care worker at the Dorothy Henderson Lodge in Sydney, who tested positive to the virus.

Mr Hunt said the nursing home has placed a number of residents in isolation with two residents displaying symptoms of the virus, including a 95 year old woman who has died.

NSW Health have not identified if the woman had contracted the virus and if her death was linked to the disease.
