The federal government has announced strict exemptions for Chinese high school students caught up in the coronavirus crisis.

The announcement means Year 11 and 12 students who have not been in the Hubei province may be allowed to travel to Australia to finish their studies, pending an official review of their individual case.

The announcement comes as authorities confirm six Australians who left the stricken Diamond Princess cruise ship have tested positive to the potentially deadly disease.
